Therapy for Trauma

2048496263Bad things indeed happen to good people.

Sometimes, terrible events happen, causing us to fear, withdraw, or even lash out toward others.

Maybe you’re struggling with being seriously abused in your relationships or as a child.

Being emotionally abused by family or friends is widespread. Even small offenses can damage if they are hard to forget and disrupt self-esteem.

Unfortunate events in a person’s youth can impact them into adulthood, negatively affecting their personality and lifestyle.

Or perhaps you experienced an auto accident or accidents at play that have caused trauma.

Regardless of the magnitude, trauma is important to overcome so you can live with freedom and creativity.

If you’ve experienced trauma, you’ve probably experienced shame, too. It’s never deserved, but it’s very real.

If you’re here, you probably know the effects of trauma all too well – how it affects your self-esteem, relationships, job… even your hope in life.

2195081029Living with trauma is like carrying a suitcase full of rocks everywhere.

Your freedom to live is diminished, and you have difficulty focusing on little else.

Intrusive thoughts of bad past relationships or terrible things that happened to you as a child may resurface regularly, creating shame, worry about safety, and fear that your relationships may never be “normal.” This likely causes you to feel bad about yourself, like you are “damaged” or “broken.”

You may avoid relationships or situations that remind you of your trauma, which can inconvenience you and hurt your happiness. Perhaps you feel you “attract” bad partners or seem to be repeating bad situations that lead to trauma.

Since you can’t escape the bad feelings caused by traumatic memories, you just go through the motions at home and work with hopes of someday feeling happiness. It seems you are caught in a nightmare with no escape.

Trauma Img4Marilyn* was a 44-year-old woman with severe self-esteem issues.

Her anxiety and depression were amplified by memories of how her dad treated her badly as a child and how a former partner sexually abused her.

She felt much of her past difficulty was her fault. Because of this, she couldn’t feel like a good person. She constantly ruminated on her past struggles, concluding that she just wasn’t as good as others.

She felt stuck and didn’t know how to improve her situation.

Marilyn and I worked together on helping her focus on what she could do with her strengths and interests each day.

We worked through the effects of her trauma and how that affected her self-image.

We discussed her feelings about herself, her past, and what she would like to see in her future.

Together, we explored her values, helping her change her mindset to keep her thoughts as positive as possible.

Through understanding, support, and encouragement, she could overcome the effects of the trauma and focus more on what she wanted out of life.

Through therapy, Marilyn became a new person who wasn’t plagued by the past. Therapy worked for Marilyn, and it will work for you, too.

You know your peace of mind is worth it.
